Italy is a country that never ceases to amaze with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and exquisite cuisine. One of the hidden gems we discovered on our recent travels is Bagni di Pisa, a luxurious spa resort located in the heart of Tuscany.

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Bagni di Pisa boasts a rich history that dates back to the ancient Romans, who first discovered the healing properties of its natural hot springs. In the 18th century, it became a favorite retreat for the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, who transformed it into a luxurious spa destination.

The elegant villa, with its classic architecture and beautiful gardens, has welcomed illustrious guests seeking relaxation and rejuvenation for centuries.

Today, Bagni di Pisa seamlessly blends its storied past with modern luxury, offering a timeless escape where history and wellness converge.

Here’s a travel guide to help you make the most of your stay at this enchanting destination.

Arrival and First Impressions

Bagni di Pisa is nestled in the picturesque town of San Giuliano Terme, just a short drive from the historic city of Pisa. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the grandeur of the 18th-century villa that houses the resort. The elegant facade, with its classic architecture and beautiful gardens, set the tone for a stay that promised relaxation and indulgence. We went here by cab from the airport, and I think the cost was around 50 euro, which is a bit expensive. Especially If you want to go and visit Pisa for the night.

Accommodations

The rooms at Bagni di Pisa are nothing short of spectacular. We stayed in a beautifully appointed suite with high ceilings, antique furnishings, and a stunning view of the Tuscan countryside. The blend of modern comfort and historical charm was evident in every detail, from the plush bedding to the luxurious bathroom amenities. Each room also offers the usual complimentary things, as a free Wi-Fi, a minibar, and a flat-screen TV, ensuring a comfortable and connected stay.

Spa and Wellness

The highlight of Bagni di Pisa is undoubtedly its thermal spa. The resort is built around natural hot springs that have been renowned for their healing properties since ancient Roman times. The spa facilities include indoor and outdoor thermal pools, a Turkish bath, and a variety of treatment rooms offering massages, facials, and other wellness therapies.

The mineral-rich waters and expert treatments left me feeling completely relaxed and revitalized.

Dining

Dining at Bagni di Pisa is a culinary delight. The on-site restaurant, Dei Lorena, offers a menu that celebrates the flavors of Tuscany with a modern twist. I enjoyed a delightful breakfast buffet each morning, featuring fresh fruits, pastries, and a selection of local cheeses and cured meats.

For dinner, the restaurant offers an à la carte menu with dishes like homemade pasta, fresh seafood, and succulent meats, all paired with excellent local wines.

The resort also has a cozy bar where you can enjoy a cocktail or a glass of prosecco while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Activities and Excursions

While the spa is the main attraction, Bagni di Pisa also offers a range of activities to enhance your stay. You can take a leisurely bike ride through the scenic countryside, participate in a cooking class to learn the secrets of Tuscan cuisine, or embark on a guided tour of the nearby cities of Pisa and Lucca.

I particularly enjoyed a day trip to Pisa, where I visited the iconic Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery. Another highlight was exploring the charming town of Lucca, with its well-preserved Renaissance walls and picturesque streets.

Practical Tips

  • Getting There: Bagni di Pisa is conveniently located about 20 minutes by car from Pisa International Airport. You can also take a train to San Giuliano Terme from Pisa or Florence.

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Tuscany is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild, and the countryside is at its most beautiful.

  • Packing Essentials: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit for the thermal pools, comfortable shoes for exploring the area, and a good book to enjoy by the pool or in the gardens.

Potential Drawbacks

While my stay at Bagni di Pisa was overwhelmingly positive, there were a couple of minor drawbacks worth noting:

  • Price: The luxurious experience comes with a high price tag, which might not suit all budgets. It's important to consider the costs of accommodation, spa treatments, and dining when planning your stay.

  • Limited Dining Options: Although the on-site restaurant is excellent, the limited dining options within the immediate vicinity of the resort might require you to travel to nearby towns for more variety.

The combination of luxurious accommodations, world-class spa facilities, and the stunning Tuscan landscape made it a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a wellness retreat, or simply a relaxing vacation, Bagni di Pisa offers an unparalleled experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

I can’t wait to return and explore more of what this beautiful region has to offer. Staying at Bagni di Pisa was a truly unforgettable experience.
