About Split
Split is a lively Adriatic city built around Diocletian's Palace, a Roman complex that remains part of the everyday city rather than a closed monument. The palace and surrounding historic centre form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the waterfront, markets and Marjan peninsula add easy walks close to the centre. Split is also a major transport hub for ferries to nearby islands and buses along the Dalmatian coast. Stay in or near the centre if you want to explore on foot, but expect crowds around the palace in summer. Spring and early autumn offer a calmer balance of city life and coastal trips.
