    About Italy

Italy is divided into 20 regions (regioni), each with its own distinct character, cuisine, and traditions. These regions are further subdivided into 107 provinces (province) and over 7,900 municipalities (comuni). The northern regions like Lombardy and Piedmont are known for their Alpine landscapes and industrial heritage, while central Italy—including Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio—is celebrated for its Renaissance art and rolling countryside. Southern regions such as Campania, Calabria, and Sicily offer ancient Greek ruins, volcanic landscapes, and some of the country's most vibrant coastal culture. Five regions (Sicily, Sardinia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Valle d'Aosta) have special autonomous status with additional legislative powers.
