Valencia brings together a historic Mediterranean city and striking contemporary architecture. Start in the old centre at the Silk Exchange, La Lonja de la Seda, whose Gothic trading halls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then head toward the City of Arts and Sciences for a very different view of the city. The former riverbed of the Turia is now a long garden that connects neighbourhoods and makes a walk or cycle ride part of the visit. To understand the landscape beyond the streets, explore the Albufera lagoon south of the city and the nearby village of El Palmar. Valencia is a good base for mixing architecture, food and time by the coast, but the centre, beach and lagoon are distinct areas: plan them separately rather than assuming everything is a short walk away.
