About Xàtiva
Xàtiva is an inland city in Valencia province best known for its castle, a long hilltop complex divided into Castell Menor and Castell Major. The climb rewards visitors with a view over the surrounding landscape as well as a way into the city’s layered history. Down in the centre, older streets and squares make a useful contrast to the exposed fortifications above. Xàtiva is also closely associated with the Borja, or Borgia, family, two of whose members became popes. Set aside time for both the castle and the lower town instead of seeing the fortress only from a distance. The uphill sections can be demanding in hot weather; check access and conditions before you visit.
